This recipe for the Life-Changing Loaf of Bread has transformed many aspects of my eating habits from a mundane and routine experience to an amazing one. Baking bread is an art and achieving a perfect balance between flavour, texture and nutrition is challenging, but the Life-Changing Loaf of Bread will revolutionize your entire baking experience.

This bread recipe is incredibly simple, yet highly nutritious and delicious. It is vegan, grain-free, gluten-free, dairy-free and packed with healthy nutritional ingredients. The creation of this life-changing loaf was born in Cape Town at a little health cafe called The Foodbarn. The creator, Sarah Britton was seeking to make a highly nutritious and easy-to-bake seeded bread.

What differentiates this bread from others is the use of psyllium husk powder which is a magical ingredient helping to bind everything together without needing any other type of starch or flour. A combination of seeds like sunflower seeds, flax seeds, hazelnuts and rolled oats give it crunchiness while maple syrup adds natural sweetness without overpowering the seed loaf taste.

I highly recommend this seed loaf bread to those who are looking for healthier options within their baked goods. So roll up your sleeves and let’s get started!

One of the best things about this recipe is that it’s highly adaptable. You can easily make substitutions for many of the ingredients based on what you have in your pantry. Here are some ideas to get you started:

– Instead of hazelnuts: try almonds, pecans, or walnuts.

– Instead of sunflower seeds: use pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, or even chopped pistachios.

– Instead of maple syrup: honey or agave syrup fits the bill.

– Instead of coconut oil: try melted butter or ghee if you prefer a richer flavor.

– Instead of flaxseed meal: ground chia seeds work as an effective substitute.

– Rather than psyllium husk powder: activated charcoal works great.

Another variation you could try is adding dried fruits such as raisins or cherries for a touch of sweetness. Consider using cranberries for some added tartness! You could also incorporate savory spices such as garlic powder, paprika, or cayenne pepper to inject some unique flavors.

Remember that every substitution will alter the final texture and taste, so be mindful of how your variations affect the final texture and taste of your loaf bread recipe.

Ultimately, this recipe is incredibly flexible — it allows for creativity while retaining an amazing combination of flavors and nutrition facts.

The Life-Changing Loaf of Bread is a truly versatile recipe that can be made ahead of time and stored for several days without losing flavor or texture. In fact, the longer it sits, the better it gets! Here are some tips to ensure that your bread remains fresh and delicious:

Make-Ahead:

If you want to save time and prepare the bread in advance, you can make the dough up to three days before baking. Simply combine all the dry ingredients (except for the psyllium husk) in a bowl and mix well. Then, add the wet ingredients and stir until everything is well combined. Cover the bowl with a towel and let it sit at room temperature for at least 2 hours or overnight if possible. When you’re ready to bake, follow the recipe instructions as usual.

Storing:

To store your bread, let it cool completely before wrapping it tightly with plastic wrap or keeping it in an airtight container. You can keep it at room temperature for up to 5 days, or in the fridge for up to 10 days. The bread freezes well too – just slice it up and store in an airtight freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Reheating:

To reheat your bread, preheat your oven to 350F (180C). Slice off as much bread as you want and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until heated through and crispy. Similarly, you can toast individual slices in a toaster or under the broiler for a quick and easy breakfast.

Whether you’re making this bread ahead of time or just need to store leftovers, these tips will ensure that your Life-Changing Loaf stays fresh and delicious until the very last crumb.

Preparing a new recipe can be intimidating, especially if it’s a life-changing loaf of bread. You may have questions on whether to substitute ingredients, what tools to use or how to bake the bread in the perfect way. In this section, I’ll provide tips and tricks to help you make the perfect Life-Changing Loaf of Bread every time.

Firstly, be sure to follow the instructions and measurements precisely, as baking is a science. A slight variation in ingredient measurement can hugely impact the outcome of your loaf. If you happen to see nutrition facts with the package of the ingredients you use, try to adjust your recipe accordingly – this will definitely improve your loaf.

Secondly, let the dough sit after assembling it in the pan for at least 2 hours or even overnight. This will give time for the psyllium husk powder and chia seeds enough time to absorb water before baking, helping keep the dough together once baked.

You’ll also want to use a flexible silicon loaf pan when baking your life-changing loaf of bread. Flexibility enables smooth release of bread; food won’t stick as compared to a regular pan where your bread may get stuck or burnt which could result in an awful experience that will ultimately discourage from further attempts.

Additionally, bake your seeded bread at a low temperature (325°F) instead of high heat, so it can cook evenly without burning or having an uneven color on all sides.

Finally, cool the Life-Changing Loaf of Bread completely on a wire rack before slicing in order to allow yourself room for easy yet precise cuts. The good thing with this tip is that once you get used to it cutting becomes even easier and less daunting!

By following these tips and tricks you are certainly guaranteed an amazing life changing bread experience!

FAQ

Now that you know how to make the life-changing loaf of bread, it’s time to answer some of the most common questions about this recipe. From ingredient substitutions to nutritional information, we’ve got you covered in this frequently asked questions section. So, let’s dive right in!

What is the secret to making homemade bread?

As a baking assistant, I highly recommend using the appropriate yeast for your recipe. It is crucial to note that not all yeasts are created equal. Hence, selecting the right one can make all the difference. Additionally, proper storage of yeast is just as important. To ensure your dough rises perfectly, you should make sure your yeast container is tightly sealed and stored in a cool place, away from moisture and direct sunlight.

Another element to be cautious about is salt. It may seem like a minor ingredient, but it plays a significant role in the outcome of your baking. Therefore, it would be best to handle it with care, especially when measuring. An incorrect measurement could either spoil the recipe’s taste or even the entire outcome.

Baking is an art that requires patience and time. Do not be in a hurry to finish your baking project. Give your bread enough time to rise, and for the flavors to develop fully. Skipping or rushing any step might ruin your final product.

Don’t stick to a single flour type. You would be surprised by the different flavors and textures that come with experimenting with different flour brands. Hence, do not shy away from trying and mixing different flours.

Another secret tool to consider is vitamin C. Aside from keeping the doctor away, adding a pinch of vitamin C to your bread recipe can help improve its elasticity, texture, and flavor.

Just like any other art, baking requires practice. Do not be discouraged if your first few attempts do not meet your expectations. Consistent practice will undoubtedly help you perfect your craft.

Lastly, be cautious of over-proving your dough. Although it may lead to an airy and fluffy texture, it tends to collapse after baking, leading to a hollow center. Hence, knowing the appropriate proofing duration for your recipe would significantly improve your baking skills.

Why is it called Cape Seed Loaf?

The recipe for Cape Seed Bread typically involves kneading and using yeast, although the original version did not contain yeast. This unique bread originated in Cape Town, South Africa, and was developed by a local farmer who utilized the seeds he had readily available.

How do you add psyllium husk to baking bread?

Psyllium husk powder is a versatile ingredient that can be used as a substitute for eggs in baking. If you want to replace eggs as a binder in your baked goods recipe, you can use an equivalent amount of psyllium husk powder. Alternatively, if you prefer not to create an “egg,” you can simply add one teaspoon of psyllium husk powder per egg to your dry ingredients.

THE LIFE-CHANGING LOAF OF BREAD

THE LIFE-CHANGING LOAF OF BREAD Recipe

This recipe was found on www.mynewroots.org. It was posted by Sarah Britton who got the recipe from a friend. I'm posting it here for safekeeping. This dense bread is high in protein and fiber; it's also gluten-free and vegan. SOME NOTES: Do not substitute the psyllium. If you have a nut allergy, replace nuts with seeds. If you use ground flax seeds you will need more water. You will also need more water if you use quinoa instead of oats. Use certified gluten-free oats if you have a gluten sensitivity. I just made this loaf; it was easy to put together. I'm not sure if it's the ingredients or I'm just not used to 'healthy' food. I didn't like it at room temperature (it is a little better refrigerated.) I tried to get all unsalted ingredients but was unsuccessful. I will probably omit the salt the next time I try it. the loaf had the saltiness of salt water. Thank you, Snowpea, for suggesting I add the parchment paper to the instructions.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1/2 cup flax seed
  • 1/2 cup hazelnuts (or almonds)
  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 4 tablespoons psyllium, seed husks (3 Tbsp. if using psyllium husk powder)
  • 1 teaspoon fine grain sea salt (add 1/2 tsp. if using coarse salt)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (for sugar-free diets, use a pinch of stevia)
  • 3 tablespoons melted coconut oil (or 3 Tbsp ghee)
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Combine all dry ingredients in a flexible, silicon loaf pan. Stir well.
  • Whisk maple syrup, oil and water together in a measuring cup. Add to dry ingredients. Mix very well until everything is completely soaked and dough becomes very thick (if the dough is too thick to stir, add one or two teaspoons of water until the dough is manageable). Smooth out the top with the back of a spoon. Let sit out on the counter for at least 2 hours, or all day or overnight. To ensure the dough is ready, it should retain its shape even when you pull the sides of the loaf pan away from it. If using a metal loaf pan, line it with parchment paper before adding the ingredients. The loaf will come out easily when it's time to take it out to turn it.
  • Place loaf pan in the oven on the middle rack, and bake for 20 minutes.
  • Remove bread from loaf pan, place it upside down directly on the rack and bake for another 30-40 minutes. Bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped. Let cool completely before slicing.
  • Store bread in a tightly sealed container for up to five days. Freezes well too – slice before freezing for quick and easy toast!
