Step 1: Create the Crust

Start by preparing the crust. To do this, combine 1 1/2 cups of graham cracker crumbs, 1/4 cup of sugar, and 1/3 cup of melted butter in a bowl. Mix until well combined and then press into a 9-inch pie dish. You can use the back of a spoon or your hands to press the mixture down firmly into the dish.

Step 2: Make the Filling

Next comes the filling! In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 packages of instant chocolate pudding mix with 2 cups of cold milk. Use an electric mixer on low speed to blend until well combined, approx. 2 minutes.

Once you have mixed it thoroughly, add in 1 cup of vanilla ice cream and continue mixing for another 2 minutes until everything is combined.

Pour the mixture into the prepared graham cracker crust until it is evenly distributed. Smooth out any rough spots using a spatula or spoon.

Cover loosely with plastic wrap or foil and place in the refrigerator to set. This typically takes about two hours but may take longer depending on your refrigerator’s temperature.

From the oven to the fork, a delicious Bishop’s Chocolate Pie awaits.

First of all, let’s talk about what pairs best with the Bishop’s Chocolate Pie: vanilla ice cream. Trust me when I say that there is just something magical about the combination of warm and fudgy chocolate pie with a generous scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream on top.

To serve this delectable dessert, simply cut the pie into wedges and place each slice onto a dessert plate. Top with a dollop of Cool Whip or whipped cream if desired, followed by a scoop of vanilla ice cream. For an extra special touch, drizzle some chocolate syrup over the top and garnish with fresh berries.

If you want to get really fancy, consider making an additional batch of chocolate pudding and layering it with whipped cream (or Cool Whip) to make a decadent chocolate ambrosia pie. It’s an impressive-looking dessert that tastes even better than it looks.

As for beverages, I recommend serving a glass of cold milk to complement the rich and indulgent flavor of this pie. If you want to add an adult twist, pair your chocolate pie with a glass of full-bodied red wine like Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir.

As a busy baker, I know how important it is to prepare and plan ahead. Fortunately, Bishop’s Chocolate Pie recipe can easily be made ahead of time, stored in the fridge or freezer, and reheated perfectly.

To make the pie ahead of time, simply follow the instructions as usual, but allow the pie to cool completely before storing it. Once cool, wrap the pie tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. If you need to store it for longer than that, it’s best to place it in the freezer.

When it comes time to reheat your Bishop’s Chocolate Pie, remove it from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before placing it in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, you can reheat individual slices in the microwave for 30 seconds to a minute until they are heated through.

One key tip to keep in mind when reheating this recipe is not to leave it out at room temperature for too long. Pudding-based desserts like this one are best enjoyed cold, so it’s essential to get them back into the fridge quickly after reheating.

Overall, Bishop’s Chocolate Pie recipe is perfect for make-ahead meals or a sweet treat that you can enjoy right away. Whether you’re looking for a dessert that can be prepared well in advance or something that can be stored in your freezer for additional convenience, this recipe has got you covered.

Tips for Perfect Results

Making the perfect chocolate pie can be a bit tricky, even for experienced bakers. However, with a few helpful tips and tricks, you’ll be sure to create a delicious and beautiful Bishop’s Chocolate Pie every time. Here are some of my go-to tips for achieving perfect results:

Firstly, when making the graham cracker crust, make sure to fully combine the ingredients in order to create a sturdy base that won’t crumble when sliced. I recommend using a food processor or blender to finely crush the graham crackers and mix them with melted butter and sugar until it resembles wet sand.

Secondly, for the filling, take care not to overcook the pudding mix. Instant pudding is quick and easy to prepare but it can easily become grainy or lumpy if cooked for too long. Follow the instructions on the box carefully and remove it from the heat as soon as it thickens.

Thirdly, when folding in the whipped cream or Cool Whip, do so gently to avoid any air pockets. Overmixing can cause your chocolate pie to lose its smooth texture and become fluffy or grainy.

Lastly, make sure to let your finished Bishop’s Chocolate Pie chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving. This will allow it to set properly so that each slice holds its shape when served.

By following these simple tips and tricks, you’ll be able to create the perfect Bishop’s Chocolate Pie every time. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different variations and toppings to make it your own!

Bishop's Chocolate Pie

Bishop’s Chocolate Pie Recipe

We lived in Des Moines from 1974-76 and discovered Bishop's Cafeteria at Merle Hay Mall. Anytime we had out-of-town guests, they always wanted to dine there. And of course, everybody had to have a slice of Bishop's Chocolate Pie for dessert. This is a copycat recipe that my mother-in-law gave me many, many years ago. I'm making 4 pies today -- one to keep and 3 to send to Ronald McDonald House tomorrow for a supper that my sorority chapter is serving. There are many variations of this receipe, and this is the one from the kitchen of Helen Julis Court, Ottumwa IA.
